The animals, Akiba, and the school

We need your support.

The animals

Pets in need, and the ones who live here

At Madabay Lodge we care deeply about animal welfare, above all the cats and dogs that are cruelly mistreated all over Nosy Be. So far we have rescued one dog, Loulou, now the lodge’s mascot on Instagram, and six kittens who live at the lodge. Thanks to the French non-profit Nosy Save Animals, all of them have been sterilised and vaccinated, working with the local authorities and the prefecture of Nosy Be.

Who we work with

A non-profit working on Nosy Be for the island’s dogs and cats: sterilisation, vaccination and identification, humane alternatives to the poisoning of stray dogs, and teaching children on the island to care for animals. It works with the local authorities and with vets from Madagascar and abroad.

On Nosy Komba

A farm, a school and a dispensary

Akiba is a Malagasy association that has been at work on Nosy Komba since 2015, and one of the local associations Madabay Lodge supports.

On the slopes of the island it runs an agroforestry farm, where cocoa, coffee, vanilla, pepper and spices grow in the shade of the trees, with a workshop and a shop for what the farm produces. It also runs a school in the forest, and a dispensary for the people who live on the island.

The Nosy Komba excursion can include a stop at Akiba.

If your walk takes you there, its shop is the easiest way to help: what Akiba sells helps pay for its work, the dispensary included. You can also give or become a member through its donations and membership page, and it welcomes volunteers with a skill to share.

The school

A school in Antafondro

Madabay Lodge supports I Aid Madagascar Onlus, an Italian non-profit that builds and equips nursery and primary schools, wells and water systems in villages on Nosy Be and Nosy Komba, the ones away from the tourist roads.

Antafondro is one of them. The school the charity built there is at the other end of the beach.
